“Pet nups” could help you retain custody of your four legged friend

It was reported in the news today that the animal charity Blue Cross has devised what they call a "pet nup", which will clearly state who will get ownership of a pet should a couple separate.

Amanda Owens, head of our family team comments:

“We have definitely seen an increase in the number of clients enquiring about pre-nuptial agreements within this last year, particularly for those who are entering into a second marriage and wish to protect the assets that they worked hard to retain from their first marriage for the benefit of their children.

We have had a number of requests that certain items of property and assets are specifically covered in the pre-nuptial agreement, but no-one has raised the issue of custody of any pets!  No doubt this is something that we will come across in due course.”

For further information, and if you require any advice in relation to a pre-nuptial agreement or, indeed, a post-nuptial agreement, then please contact us.
