    Cohabitation figures show need for law reform

    The Office for National Statistics has analysed the 2001 and 2011 Census data, finding that the proportion of households in the UK which comprise cohabiting couples rose from 14% to 17%.  Of these, 38% of the cohabitating couples had a dependant child. The number of households with married couples fell from 70% to 65%. Read more

    Civil partnerships to remain available to same sex couples only

    Same sex couples will be able to convert their existing civil partnerships into marriages from 10 December 2014.  This provision was included in the Marriage (Same Sex) Couples Act 2013, although the Government delayed implementation.  Same sex couples have been able to marry since March 2014.
